I used a framing square for years before I bought a speed square. What an idiot! In the hands of anyone except a genuine expert (when was the last time you saw someone use the 100ths table or work out complex compound cuts on a framer?), the speed square will do as much and do it faster. It’s actually superior for 90 degree cross-cuts and, for general framing use, just as good for angle cuts. It will also keep its accuracy forever, unlike a framing square. The aluminum models are the only ones to buy – I can’t imagine why ANYONE would buy a plastic speed square for the piddly difference in price. I have a 7″ and a 12″ and use them both all the time.

In response to the erroneous definition by R. Harper. A square is a device used to construct a right triangle. (woodworker’s). Therefore, a square has nothing to do with its shape. The Swanson Tool is one of the most used tools in any construction project, including my shop.

All hail the Speed Square, the King of Tools. I have no idea how anyone was able to build anything without these. Get the Swanson best $8 you will ever spend. If these things cost $45 they would still be worth it.
