Delta calls its 22-580 a finishing planer, but it’s really two planers in one. A dimensioning speed of 60 cpi allows you to shave rough wood to its desired thickness quickly and accurately, with virtually no snipe. Then, with a single pass at the quicker finishing speed of 90 cpi, your wood comes out ultrasmooth and ready to go. The razor-sharp, double-sided M2 steel knives are powered by a 15 amp, 120-volt, single-phase motor. Bells and whistles like a blade zero indicator (which lets you set the cutterhead to the exact thickness of your wood), patented cutterhead lock (which eliminates snipe), and easy blade-change system add to the value, as do the oversize infeed and outfeed tables, which make it easier to glide your wood through the machine. Sure, you could spend a day in your shop building your own tenoning jig. Or you could spend the day making furniture with this one. Your choice. We know what we’d choose, that’s for sure. Delta’s universal jig fits any table saw that has a 3/8-by-3/4-inch miter slot and adapts to right- or left-tilting arbors. You’ll get top-quality craftsmanship with the microfine-thread adjustment knob, allowing you to adjust width-of-cut settings to a hair for the snuggest possible tenon fit. We particularly like Delta’s redesign of the handle. Most tenoning jigs we’ve used have one handle, sometimes up too high to offer good control. But Delta’s replaced that with two, positioned at the jig’s base, just where we always thought they ought to be. Of all the mobile bases we’ve seen, this is the king. The sturdy corner brackets, wheels and casters, foot pedal, and all the hardware are supplied; you supply the hardwood. We like this deal because you make the stand to fit your needs, all the way up to 30 by 30 inches and 300 pounds of load if you build your rails of oak. In a small shop or a garage shop that has to accommodate your cars, put together a couple of these and roll your tools out of the way when you’re done working. With other bases we’ve looked at, you have to tip up your tool and waddle carefully. With this Delta, just unlock the foot pedal, engage the third-point caster, and you’re off. The wheels and casters are quality, and they move like a dream. We wouldn’t limit use to just tools–this base could come in handy for moving appliances, too. A small footprint and big power – that’s what you get with this Delta dust collector. It takes up so little room because its volume is vertical, not horizontal. Standing 83 inches tall, it takes up just about 4-1/2 square feet of floorspace, but its 3,450 rpm motor moves a maximum of 1,200 cubic feet of air per minute.

The small footprint is valuable in the home workshop, where space is often at a premium, but it’s beneficial, too, because this machine is on rugged casters, and its size lets you move it wherever you need it in your shop, from the jointer to the planer to the saw to the sander. If you’re fortunate enough to have a ducting system and blast gates in place, this machine stows easily in a corner and does all the work from there. It’s rated at 88 decibels, but it’s quite a bit more tolerable than a shop vacuum, we think.

Assembly is minimal; expect about 45 minutes and a little frustration if you’re going it alone. The only tricky part, as with any dust collector assembly, is mounting the plastic collection bag. There are two different rings to choose from; use what works for you. The upper bag filters down to 1 micron, which is a millionth of a meter, keeping the air and your lungs clear of dangerous contaminants. The collection bag is made of tough, 6-mil clear plastic, and we’ve really come around on the plastic bags from not liking them to, well, thinking they’re a good idea. Exhaust goes through the filter bag, not the collection bag, so no air (or debris) escapes, and you can easily see when the bag needs emptying without waiting for performance to falter.

There’s a nice option for installation, too, that we haven’t seen on other models: You can install the blower housing with the outlet ports facing up or down, depending on your ducting system and shop needs. And yes, you can use both ports at once – it’s that powerful.

We think this is a great investment for the home workshop or small professional shop, and your lungs are definitely worth it.–Kris Jensen-Van Heste
