Dremel calls this “the future of rotary tools.” Scoff if you want to, but they’re right. This overhaul of the standard rotary tool incorporated changes Dremel users asked for, along with new accessories and a smartly redesigned storage case with mini-cases. We’re glad to see Dremel designers separated the power switch from the speed control, something we’d certainly wished for in the past, letting you set the perfect speed for your project and not disturb it at shutoff. Its slick, gently curved new shape-—a far cry from the slightly clunky Dremel you’re used to—-just feels good in your hand. Even the case is a new generation, with a molded place for everything (including that hard-to-store flex shaft). The small accessories all fit into mini-cases, which in turn snap into the main case. Bravo! And unlike kit cases in Dremel’s past, there’s even room for expansion: two bays for more accessory kits. We like the garden tool blade and the circle cutter particularly; you can save a bundle sharpening your own lawnmower blade, and the circle cutter is one of those little gadgets you’ll find yourself using again and again. Another plus to this new Dremel is the super-cool attachments available separately, including a 2-1/4-inch wide planer and something Dremel calls the MultiSaw—a combination jig, recip and scroll saw in one. It takes quite an innovation to make us dance in the warehouse aisles. But we’re dancing. And measuring everything in sight, while we’re at it. Strait-Line’s incredible Rolling Tape measures, calculates and even tells you where to hang your pictures. We want to emphasize here that this gadget actually does the math for you. Say you’re ready to install a chair rail in the kitchen. You have two choices: You can get out your tape measure, pencil and paper and measure, add, check your math, fix your mistake, then measure and add some more—that is, if you can wrangle the tape by yourself. Your other (and far more attractive) option is to press the Rolling Tape to the wall and push the button. The way it’s designed, most people will be able to control the tool with one hand, whether it’s being used as a polisher or as its original purpose, a random-orbit sander. For those with smaller hands or less hand strength, just attach the auxiliary handle for a superior grip. It’s easy to operate, easy to handle and easy on your body ergonomically.

We like that the speed dial is on the back of the body, where it’s less likely to get bumped and rev up at the wrong time. The speed range of 2,500 to 6,000 rpm is great for everything from polishing to waxing and buffing and, with the right attachments, sanding, too. It’s got a relatively wide orbital swing – more, we think, than most on the market – preventing swirl marks as you work, and vibration in hand is minimal.

Be aware that this polisher comes with just one polishing pad, and you’ll need more than that for any polishing/waxing job you undertake. If you ever plan to tackle anything tougher than screwing or unscrewing light switch covers and battery compartments, you really want a good, basic drill/driver around the house. The DriveMaster is just that–a solid drill/driver suitable for hanging pictures and shelves, drilling holes for drywall anchors, anchoring furniture, or putting together “assemble yourself” furnishings–at a price that is truly remarkable.

DriveMaster has clearly chosen to make voltage their strong point. At time of writing, you won’t find another 14.4-volt drill/driver at anywhere near this price. A couple of 9.6-volt models only come close. A higher voltage means that you will generally be able to operate the drill longer between battery charges. You can work with the DriveMaster for a good, solid hour without having to recharge the tool, which is important for things like putting together “assemble-yourself” furniture. The last thing you want to do is leave a table standing on two legs while you wait for a battery to recharge.

At 4.5 pounds, this is one of the lighter drill/drivers available, which is nice for the less burly, or anyone who wants to avoid wrist fatigue. There is a clutch with 8 torque settings, which is what makes it a drill/driver instead of just a drill. Just set the drill to the tension you want. When the drill meets a certain resistance level (for example, when your screw has been set), it will just spin without applying force to the screw. This helps prevent stripping screw heads and damaging whatever it is you are screwing into. The forward reverse switch is conveniently located above the trigger for quick and smooth directional changes. There is built-in storage for 2 bits on the base. Cordless tools really come in handy when the job site is without power or when portability is a must. Skil has put together four of the most commonly used tools with the added bonus of a battery operated stud finder (batteries included) to complete this five tool kit. Included in the kit is a 7-1/4-inch circular saw with carbide tipped blade. The saw has a second ergonomically designed handle for added grip and safety. With both hands on the saw housing there’s little chance of an accidental kickback if the blade should bind. There is an on-tool spindle wrench for changing the blade, a rearview depth gauge with large bold lettering and a safety lock guarded trigger to prevent accidental starts.

Next there is a 3/8-inch keyless chuck drill/driver. The Skil 2887-16 drill/driver has a two-speed gearbox that allows the user to shift from high-speed drilling to high torque for driving screws or bolts. The gear change lever is conveniently located on top of the tool housing next to the forward/reverse indicator light and just above the two-finger variable speed trigger. In addition to the built-in bit index and bit storage compartment on top of the housing there’s a built-in work light at the base of the drill. A double-ended screw bit is stored on the side of the tool’s base.

For rough cutting the kit includes a reciprocating saw that has all the features required by skilled craftsmen and is especially useful in removing damaged building materials or tree limbs. The saw has an adjustable foot plate that keeps the tool secured to the work’s surface, a rubber boot at the working end of the tool, a textured handle for comfort and control and a variable speed trigger. Depending on the products to be cut, the blade’s speed can be adjusted to anywhere from 0 to 2800 strokes per minute. In addition there is a side mounted “orbit” switch, which allows the user to control the swing of the blade for more accurate cutting of various materials. The saw features a quick change E-Z lock spring-loaded blade attachment (no tools required to change blades), and an on-tool 2-blade storage compartment with two blades.

How could you use all this power if there were no lights? Skil has packed in an 18-volt flashlight with an articulating head so that the light can be turned to shine in any direction in front of the light. The drill, saws and light can be powered by the two 18-volt batteries included in the kit. Each battery has a charge rate meter that lets the user know how much power is left. The batteries slide easily onto the bottom of the tools giving the tool bodies excellent balance. Power, power and more power! The 18-volt 1/2-inch hammer drill/driver’s high-torque motor churns out an impressive 500 inch-pounds of torque—imagine the jobs it could tackle. We were surprised by how good it feels in hand, thanks, we think, to its neatly balanced design that places the handle toward the center of the tool. A nice touch is the ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws for a superb hold on your bit. And the all-metal, three-speed transmission is so innovative that DeWalt patented it. All we know is that this is one powerhouse of a hammer drill/driver, no matter what mode it’s in. The DC385 recip saw’s keyless blade clamp wins points in our book for fast blade changes. And talk about fast—with its one-inch stroke length, it runs at 2,900 strokes per minute. Like the drill, it’s well balanced and feels good in hand. It’s compact, lightweight and offers great cutline visibility through the pivoting shoe’s open top. Plus, we like that the blade will reverse for flush and plunge cutting.
