Woodworkers who like the smooth, accurate performance of Bosch’s jig saws will appreciate this new cordless model. It offers plenty of power for making curved cuts in a variety of materials, and doesn’t skimp on usability features. At its heart is a powerful and smooth-running Bosch-built motor and a durable and lightweight magnesium gear housing. The saw has variable speed from 0 to 2,000 strokes per minute with a 1-inch stroke length, and a maximum capacity of 2-3/4 inches in wood and 5/16 inch in steel. The base bevels 45 degrees and comes with a foot cover to protect finished surfaces. The tool-free blade-changing system is as simple and quick as we’ve seen, and even ejects used blades with the pull of a lever. There’s a soft rubber top-handle grip that can be used in a couple different positions, and the variable-speed trigger has an ambidextrous lock-on switch. With this tool’s smooth performance and Bosch-built reliability, we think any one who finds curve cutting and cords a cumbersome combination will appreciate it. When we first heard of barrel grip jig saws, we were pretty skeptical about the comfort and control they could offer, since we were so accustomed to the typical top-handle design. It really was a genuine surprise to feel the difference. The control is amazing, and cutting scrollwork is an absolute delight with this saw, something we can’t honestly say about most top-handle models. With this design, it almost feels as if the cutter is an extension of your hand, smooth and responsive. The blade-change system on this Bosch is among the best we’ve seen: They weren’t kidding when they named it the One Touch Blade Change. We like the speed range, from 500 all the way up to 2,800 strokes per minute to handle whatever you need to cut, and the cutting line actually stays clean because of the integrated, adjustable blower (which, we have to say, works better at higher speeds). With the barrel design, there’s no trigger; instead, the speed is controlled by a dial on the rear of the tool body. It’s a tad clumsy at first when you’re used to trigger-controlled speed, but it’s a learning curve, and it’s worth it.–Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Gentle curves, sharp turns, circles, ovals or straight cuts, it’s all a cinch with this DeWalt. It’s got so much power, it can easily take on jobs you’d normally hand to your circular saw, but it’s got the finesse you need for cutting curves.

Our pet peeve with jigsaws has always been the complicated, tooled method of changing a blade, but bravo to DeWalt for engineering this tool-free, practically effortless blade changeout system. The flip of a lever is all it takes, and you’re back on the job. It’s nice, too, to not have to handle that sizzling hot blade – the saw ejects it for you.

Control is phenomenal, and it really feels like the saw does the work for you. It’s on the heavy side at about 7 pounds, but that weight turns out to be an advantage. The motor powers the blade at 0 to 3,000 strokes per minute, so whether you’re cutting 1/8th-inch ply or a 2-by-4, this saw does not disappoint. In fact, it’s so powerful that it’s easy to forget that this is, after all, a cordless saw. You can tailor the speed and aggression to suit your cutting needs with a four-position selector that changes the attitude of the blade for different cutting applications. The non-marring shoe bevels to 45 degrees with positive stops, but we found it a tad difficult to determine the exact angle we’d set. A minor quibble, but one worth mentioning.

We particularly like how this saw feels in hand. Even though it’s weighty, it’s beautifully balanced, and the curved rubber grip feels good to grasp. The shape of the front of the tools lends itself nicely to your free hand for guidance. And while you’re cutting, the built-in dust blower really does a great job of keeping your cutting line clear. Carpenters and contractors will love this saw, and the do-it-yourselfer will find a hundred uses for it. Well worth the investment, we think. –Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with its top-handle models, it’s getting close to perfecting it. The 1587AVSK has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch–and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate’s plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won’t get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system–if a little tricky at first–works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch’s reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. –Michael Shilling

It couldn’t be any easier than this: a cordless hand saw that cuts wood, metal, drywall, plastic, rope and more. We like it for its grab-it-and-go convenience and because it doesn’t balk at wood that’s up to an inch thick. It’s a funny thing about jigsaws; most of us tend to reach for another tool in its stead, having had less-than-great experiences with the little beasts.

But here comes Bosch’s 1590, and it elevates the outcast jigsaw to the most-wanted list.

The first thing we liked about this saw is its heft; it’s beefy, solid and made with that famous Swiss quality. You wrap your hand around the soft, substantial grip, squeeze the ample trigger and the soft-start whirs gently; with hardly any effort from you, the blade slices through whatever’s ahead of it. Perhaps because it’s heavier than most jigsaws, there’s practically zero vibration, giving you a delightfully smooth, no-buzz experience, something pretty much unheard of in your average jigsaw.

Another nice feature is the speed mechanism: Set your maximum speed on the trigger dial, then control your speed up to that max by squeezing the trigger. On long cuts, you can lock the trigger on, too, and the blower actually does keep your cutline clear.

If that’s all this saw had going for it, that would be enough for us. But coolest of all is the blade-change system that literally ejects the blade in a split second, takes the new one and gets you right back to your cutting – all tool-free. Amazing.
