Dremel calls this “the future of rotary tools.” Scoff if you want to, but they’re right. This overhaul of the standard rotary tool incorporated changes Dremel users asked for, along with new accessories and a smartly redesigned storage case with mini-cases. We’re glad to see Dremel designers separated the power switch from the speed control, something we’d certainly wished for in the past, letting you set the perfect speed for your project and not disturb it at shutoff. Its slick, gently curved new shape-—a far cry from the slightly clunky Dremel you’re used to—-just feels good in your hand. Even the case is a new generation, with a molded place for everything (including that hard-to-store flex shaft). The small accessories all fit into mini-cases, which in turn snap into the main case. Bravo! And unlike kit cases in Dremel’s past, there’s even room for expansion: two bays for more accessory kits. We like the garden tool blade and the circle cutter particularly; you can save a bundle sharpening your own lawnmower blade, and the circle cutter is one of those little gadgets you’ll find yourself using again and again. Another plus to this new Dremel is the super-cool attachments available separately, including a 2-1/4-inch wide planer and something Dremel calls the MultiSaw—a combination jig, recip and scroll saw in one. Even the least artistic among us can have the coolest jack-o’-lanterns in the neighborhood this year with Dremel’s pumpkin- carving kit. It’s a neat, buzzy little unit that carves off layers of pumpkin flesh to let the light glow through. It isn’t meant to cut all the way through the pumpkin, and the effect is perfectly spooky. Powered by four AA batteries, it’s got two speeds for superior pumpkin-stock removal, 6,000 and 12,000 rpm, so it’s not a child’s toy.
	Step 1 Use a knife to cut a lid for your pumpkin. Angle the knife towards the center of the pumpkin as you cut so that the lid will rest on top of the pumpkin after the cut has been made. Use a large spoon to clean out the entire inside of the pumpkin. It is best if the walls of your pumpkin are approximately 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick.
	Step 2 Based on the size of your pumpkin, you can enlarge or reduce the size of your template using a copy machine if needed. Using spray-on adhesive, apply your template to the pumpkin.
	Step 3 Turn the tool on low and begin tracing the areas to be removed. You can use the high setting for large area material removal. The key is to remove approximately the same amount of material on your whole pumpkin to achieve a uniform depth.
	Step 4 Once you’ve finished, remove the paper template, place a light source, such as a candle, in the pumpkin, dim the lights, and see how well the light shines through your carving. If you want more light to shine through, turn the lights back on, remove the candle and remove additional material from your pumpkin.

Anyone who’s ever used a router understands the satisfaction that a cleanly cut rabbet or mortise can give. But if you’re working on small-scale projects, such as jewelry boxes or models, that monster three-horsepower fixed-base router with the 1/2-inch bit is simply overkill.

That’s where the Dremel 335 comes in. This plunge-router adapter is meant to be used with the Dremel rotary tools (models 400, 398, 395, 300, 285, and 275), which accommodate 1/8-inch diameter bits. If you already own one of these tools, buying the attachment is a great way to get an instant router without having to shell out the extra forty or fifty bucks for a single-purpose machine (that may be too big for what you’re doing anyway).

Assembling the attachment is simple: just remove the housing cap from your Dremel, reassemble the collet nut, then place the tool into the router attachment. The tool is secured in the attachment with a mounting nut and wrench (both included).

The attachment features two plunge depths, which are locked in via a rotary hand grip. Setting routing depth can be a little tricky: it’s a good idea to practice on scrap until you get a feel for it. The clear base gives you good stability and lets you see exactly what you’re doing, as does the narrow profile of the Dremel tool itself. The attachment also includes an adjustable edge guide that works very well.
