Dremel calls this “the future of rotary tools.” Scoff if you want to, but they’re right. This overhaul of the standard rotary tool incorporated changes Dremel users asked for, along with new accessories and a smartly redesigned storage case with mini-cases. We’re glad to see Dremel designers separated the power switch from the speed control, something we’d certainly wished for in the past, letting you set the perfect speed for your project and not disturb it at shutoff. Its slick, gently curved new shape-—a far cry from the slightly clunky Dremel you’re used to—-just feels good in your hand. Even the case is a new generation, with a molded place for everything (including that hard-to-store flex shaft). The small accessories all fit into mini-cases, which in turn snap into the main case. Bravo! And unlike kit cases in Dremel’s past, there’s even room for expansion: two bays for more accessory kits. We like the garden tool blade and the circle cutter particularly; you can save a bundle sharpening your own lawnmower blade, and the circle cutter is one of those little gadgets you’ll find yourself using again and again. Another plus to this new Dremel is the super-cool attachments available separately, including a 2-1/4-inch wide planer and something Dremel calls the MultiSaw—a combination jig, recip and scroll saw in one. It takes quite an innovation to make us dance in the warehouse aisles. But we’re dancing. And measuring everything in sight, while we’re at it. Strait-Line’s incredible Rolling Tape measures, calculates and even tells you where to hang your pictures. We want to emphasize here that this gadget actually does the math for you. Say you’re ready to install a chair rail in the kitchen. You have two choices: You can get out your tape measure, pencil and paper and measure, add, check your math, fix your mistake, then measure and add some more—that is, if you can wrangle the tape by yourself. Your other (and far more attractive) option is to press the Rolling Tape to the wall and push the button. Do the same thing on each surface, then read the total on the big, clear screen and buy that length of molding. Want to hang five pictures evenly on a 22-foot wall? The flattery is completely deserved, especially in this case. Cordless convenience couples with Milwaukee’s know-how for one of the finest recips on the market. We love the steel Quik-Lok blade clamp system, which lets you change out blades in a flash and without any tools. No swirls, no sweat, and a supreme shine every time: That’s what this Porter-Cable random-orbit polisher promises – and delivers.

The way it’s designed, most people will be able to control the tool with one hand, whether it’s being used as a polisher or as its original purpose, a random-orbit sander. For those with smaller hands or less hand strength, just attach the auxiliary handle for a superior grip. It’s easy to operate, easy to handle and easy on your body ergonomically.

We like that the speed dial is on the back of the body, where it’s less likely to get bumped and rev up at the wrong time. The speed range of 2,500 to 6,000 rpm is great for everything from polishing to waxing and buffing and, with the right attachments, sanding, too. It’s got a relatively wide orbital swing – more, we think, than most on the market – preventing swirl marks as you work, and vibration in hand is minimal.

Be aware that this polisher comes with just one polishing pad, and you’ll need more than that for any polishing/waxing job you undertake. If you are using this as a polisher, you’re likely going to be changing out and washing pads frequently, so we recommend picking up the hook-and-loop backer (Porter-Cable’s model number is 18001) and coordinating hook-and-loop pads.
